Welcome to my brand new website. I’m very excited about it, because I can now easily share my latest news with you—the upcoming launch of my first solo debut album. It’s all original songs and I’ve been enthusiastically working on it over the past year. Called Hearts and Arrows, it’s passionate, and inspired by, what else, but love: love that’s become expired, broken or lost. Even though it’s my first solo album, I don’t feel like I’m on my own since I’ve been collaborating with my dream band, which I’ve named The Uncommons. The band includes Don Kerr (Ron Sexsmith, Rheostatics), Steve Briggs (Russell DeCarle, Quartette, Michael Brennan) and Dennis Pendrith (Stuart Mclean’s Vinyl Cafe, Bruce Cockburn, Mose Scarlett), along with Rosalyn Dennett (The Living Daylight Stringband, Oh My Darling) and some extra special guests.
The process of recording has been a pure blast from the start, full of creative twists and surprises. Let me tell you, for example, about the working up of: “I Don’t Wanna Know.” When I originally wrote this song, I thought I had a clear idea of how it was going to go. Don Kerr, who is producing as well as playing drums, came up with something a little different. He suggested that I sing the song as a torch singer, without playing rhythm guitar. He then dreamed up a pulsing tango beat. Steve Briggs, who can play anything on the guitar masterfully, then added an unexpected electric Western riff, and Dennis Pendrith held it steady with a velvet bass line. Not yet completely satisfied, Steve also had this crazy cool idea of laying in a Jerry Lee Lewis /Bo Diddley beat.
Singing over this arrangement inspired me to really dance with my voice. And as we finalized the mix just last week, we came up with another last-minute inspiration: to add in the slinky, scraping sound of the guiro.
So, what I really wanna tell you is: the instrumental tracks on this album are hot!
But don’t just take my word for it. Have a listen here to “I Don’t Wanna Know” and a couple of other tracks. And stay tuned for more as I update you on my progress of finishing up the 12 original songs, designing the cover, shooting a video, plus a whole bunch of other details.
Last, but not least, be sure to mark your calendars with the date of Hearts and Arrows’ CD launch party that will take place on November 12, 2014!!!
